F. Thomas Hopkins F. Thomas Hopkins, Chairman
Thomas Hopkins is a shareholder and former President of the Icard-Merrill law firm and has practiced with the firm since 1977. Tom practices all areas of real estate law and has been designated by the Florida Bar as a Board Certified Real Estate Attorney. He also has extensive experience counseling clients in all aspects of estate planning. His professional affiliations and positions have included serving as President of the Sarasota County Bar Association and the Bar Association Legal Aid Society, Inc. Tom also has served as President and board member of the Sarasota County Civic League and President of the Ivy League Club. A graduate with an A.B. from Dartmouth College, Tom also earned an M.S. from the University of Southern California and his law degree from the University of Florida. Tom and his wife Wendy have three children and one grandchild.
Jody Hudgins Jody Hudgins, Vice Chair
Jody Hudgins is Executive Vice President of First National Bank of PA in Sarasota and their senior bank executive in Florida. His honors include Georgia’s “Banker of the Year”; being named an Alabama “Rising Star”; and being a delegate to the White House Conference on Small Business in 1986. Past Chairman of Sarasota County Planning Commission and Sarasota Housing Authority, he is on the Board of Community Housing Trust of Sarasota. He is a Trustee of Carson Newman College and is on the Executive Committee of the Southern Baptist Convention. He and his wife Lisa have two daughters.
John M. Strickland John M. Strickland, Treasurer
John Strickland is a partner of the Livingston, Patterson, Strickland & Siegel, P.A. law firm. John has a BA degree from the University of North Carolina and his law degree from Stetson University. He was admitted to the Florida Bar in 1971 and joined the firm of Livingston, Patterson, Strickland & Siegel in 1979. He is a member of the Sarasota County and American Bar Associations, the Florida Bar, the American Inns of Court, and the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers. John’s practice areas include civil litigation and matrimonial law. He also serves on the boards of the Salvation Army and Planned Parenthood organizations. John and his wife Caroline have one daughter.
William R. Johnson William R. Johnston, Secretary
William Johnston is Past President and COO of the New York Stock Exchange. William received his BS degree in Commerce from Washington & Lee University. He became a member of the NYSE in 1964 and a Director in 1992 and has served on numerous committees. He was Senior VP and Director of Mitchum Jones & Templeton. William also founded Agora Securities, and then merged it into LaBranche & Co. where he was Senior Managing Partner. He is currently a Director at Hollins University and Chairman of the Audit Committee and Co-chair of Development. William has served on numerous committees and advisory boards of universities; and taught at numerous colleges and universities across the country. He and his wife Elizabeth have two children and two grandchildren.
Lee Byron Lee Byron
Lee Byron is a long-time resident of Sarasota, a successful real estate agent with Michael Saunders, a former elected school board member, and very involved in the community. She presently serves as chair of the Big Brothers/Big Sisters of the Suncoast Foundation board, the Teen Court Board, the Human Services Advisory Committee (to the County Commission), and on the Government Affairs Committee for the Sarasota Association of Realtors. Lee is a graduate of Smith College with a Masters in Government from the Monterey Institute of International Studies, and is presently working on a second Masters in Pastoral Ministry from the Rice School of the Diocese of Venice. She and her late husband, Tom, have three children and two grandchildren.
Lawrence (Larry) E. Coffey Lawrence (Larry) E. Coffey (Resident)
Lawrence Coffey is a native of New Orleans where he attended parochial schools. He received his B.S. degree in Agricultural Sciences at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette. Following two years of active duty in the US Air Force after being commissioned as a second lieutenant, Larry started his 32 year career with E.I. Dupont & Company in its Agricultural Products Department. He had various sales, marketing and management assignments nationally and internationally, where his responsibilities included the Caribbean, Mexico, Central and South America. This was followed by a four year assignment in Paris, France where Larry was responsible for overseeing a national marketing and sales team, a development organization, a manufacturing plant and an experimental farm. He has served as an active volunteer for over 17 years at the Mote Marine Laboratory and as past President of their volunteer association. After living on Siesta Key for 20 years with his late wife Wanda, Larry moved to Plymouth Harbor in 2007 and the current President of the Residents Association. They have three children.
Norma H. Compton Nancy R. Cook (Resident)
Nancy Cook is a native of Louisville, Kentucky, where she attended parish and public schools. She graduated from Connecticut College for Women with a BA in Chemistry and Psychology. She taught math and sciences in secondary schools as well as college prep courses and did private tutoring. In 1947, Nancy married Marlow Cook. They have five children who now live in different parts of the country. They moved to Washington, D.C. in 1969 when her husband was elected to the United States Senate. In Kentucky and Washington, Nancy was involved in varied political activities. After she and Marlow moved to Sarasota in 1989 she became an enthusiastic participant in the Asolo Theater, The Sarasota Arts Council, The Ringling Museum and the Ringling Members Council. Nancy was a board member of the St. Armands Residents Association, participating in its zoning issues, beautification projects, and the acquisition of the Historic Designation of Harding Circle District on the National Registry. Nancy and Marlow moved to Plymouth Harbor in 2005. She is currently the immediate past President of the Residents Association.
Ellen B. Harrison Ellen B. Harrison (Resident)
Ellen Harrison was born in Kinston, North Carolina. She went to Cornell University and later to the University of Connecticut where she earned a master's degree in Education. Ellen taught at Winnetka Junior High School in Illinois and was a docent at the Art Institute of Chicago for 15 years. She has been involved in civic and community activities including the League of Women Voters, Junior League, social services and youth activities. She also enjoys reading, writing, travel, golf and tennis. Ellen and her late husband, Vance, have four children and six grandchildren. They moved to Plymouth Harbor in December 2002 and followed a family tradition as Ellen's mother was a former resident also. Ellen has contributed to Plymouth Harbor as Chairman of the Program Committee, on the Library and Décor Committees and is currently the Vice President of the Residents Association.
William R. Kennedy, M.D. William R. Kennedy, M.D.
William R. Kennedy, MD is co-owner of Kennedy White Orthopedic Center and specializes in Adult Reconstructive Joint Surgery. He is board certified by the American Board of Orthopedic Surgery and is a Fellow of both the American College of Surgeons and the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons. Dr. Kennedy graduated from Tulane Medical School and did his orthopedic residency at New York Orthopedic Hospital. While there he served as the Senior Annie C. Kane Fellow in Orthopedic Surgery and held a teaching appointment as a clinical instructor at Columbia University’s College of Physicians and Surgeons. Dr. Kennedy has designed numerous total hip systems that were manufactured by several companies from 1972 – 1995. He has also designed several knee systems and is currently the co-designer of the Zimmer CR Flex Total Knee System. A member of the Florida Arthritis Foundation Board of Directors, Dr. Kennedy is also a member of the Florida Orthopedic Society, American College of Surgeons, American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons, and the American Association of Hip and Knee Surgeons. He has served as President and Vice-President of the Society for Arthritic Joint Surgery. Dr. Kennedy enjoys spending time with his family and woodworking, especially if it involves boats. He is an avid sailor and in 1980, qualified for the Olympic final trials in the Star Class.
David Kuhn
David Kuhn is a former newspaper reporter and editor at The Wall Street Journal, the Minneapolis Star Tribune and the San Jose Mercury News. His reporting and editing positions included business editor, Washington correspondent, assistant managing editor and deputy managing editor overseeing reporters, editors and photographers. After his newspaper career, David was a Senior Vice President of Weber Shandwick Worldwide, a public relations and public affairs consulting organization. In that capacity he provided training and coaching to clients on the subjects of news media relations, news interviews, speeches and presentations, and crisis management and communications. Since 2002 he has operated his own consulting firm. He was a board member of two Twin Cities non-profit organizations and a consultant to numerous non-profits and to the Twin Cities non-profit leadership forum. David and his wife, Jan, moved to Sarasota in 2005. They are members of First Congregational United Church of Christ. They have a son in New York and a daughter in Minnesota, along with two grandchildren.
Robert Thomas Mitchell Robert Thomas Mitchell
Robert Mitchell is a native of Sarasota and graduated from the University of Florida with a BS Degree in Building Construction. He is the owner of Rowe-Mitchell Construction Company. Robert has served on the boards of several local not-for-profit agencies, which includes a branch of the YMCA and the Gulf Coast Builders Exchange. He and his wife Brenda reside in Sarasota and have two children.
Randall L. Natherson Randall L. Natherson
Randall Natherson is a partner with Natherson & Company, P.A. and has over 17 years experience providing audit, tax and other services to various business and not-for-profit organizations. He is a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants and the Florida Institute of Certified Public Accountants and is registered and licensed to practice as a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) in the State of Florida. He received his Masters of Accounting in Taxation from the University of Florida in 1991. Randall and his wife Wendy, who is also a CPA and a graduate of Florida State University, both grew up in Sarasota. They have two children.
William (Bill) Young William (Bill) Young
William Young is the Regional Managing Director for Private Banking for the Gulf Coast and Greater Tampa Bay Area for Wachovia Bank, a Wells-Fargo Company. He also is the Senior Vice President and Managing Director for Wachovia's Private Banking Group. Bill joined Wachovia in April of 2006. Prior Wachovia he served as Florida Private Banking Director for Fifth Third Bank and President and CEO for First National Bank of Florida–Sarasota. He also spent 21 years with Bank of America and predecessors in a wide variety of roles. Bill received a BA in Finance from Stetson University in 1982. Bill is the Chairman of the Health and Human Services Advisory Council and is a board member of the Community Housing Trust, the Beattie Foundation, the Sarasota County Foundation, the Pollack Foundation and the Selby Foundation. He also serves on the Florida Bar Grievance Committee for the Twelfth Judicial Court. His past community involvement has included Community Foundation of Sarasota, Boys and Girls Club of Sarasota, Florida West Coast Symphony and Junior Achievement. Bill lives in Sarasota with his three children.
